Although I have traveled a lot in my life, my month in Berlin this yearwas the
longest I have ever continually been anywhere out of my own country. It was
terrifying and freeing, and enabled me to take a lot of photographs. Because I
speak no German, I had to rely on the English abilities of my subject, or, if
there were none, the universal language of gesture. It worked surpisingly well;
almost no one refused my camera, or seemed alarmed when I positioned their
bodies or hands accordinly with my own.
